Based on Krishan Chandar’s famous story, scripted by Gursharan Singh,TOA was performed by Chingari Theatre Birmingham at a public meeting organised by  Asian Rationalist Society Britain.

“Jug jug jeevey Gursharan Singh”, echoed 20,000 persons at Kussa village near Barnala for Bhai Manna Singh of Punjabi theatre as he received the Revolutionary Dedication Award. He has also been voted Punjabi of the Year. At the age of 77, he is still experimenting with revolutionary ideas.

With a voice that has shaken the hearts of many and a face that has depicted varied emotions, the noted Punjabi playwright feels Indian culture was being influenced by materialism and westernisation and hence plays and songs should be related to day-to-day situations.

With nearly 8,230 performances in 50 years, Gursharan Singh feels a lot still remains to be achieved.

Having developed a genre of theatre that has come to be called as rural theatre with modern sensibilities, Gursharan Singh is also the recipient of the Kalidas Samman and the State Language Department Award.

“The choice of theatre as a medium is a conscious one to express my concern for various social causes. The step has yielded results to a certain extent,” he said.

At present, he has more than 35 centres in various villages of Punjab. He trains local talent. He is also running a theatre group at the Pracheen Kala Kendra, Sector 35, Chandigarh.
