Two day film show was organised in Mehar Hotel, Dalhousie. On the first day, War and Peace, a documentary by famous documentary filmaker Anand Patwardhan was screened. On the second day, Satyajit Ray’s feature film Ganshatru was screened. Both the screening were followed by discussion. The event was organsied by People’s Voice.
The intellectuals participated in the event.
Jalandhar: 26th June, 2011- On the occasion of 36th anniversary of Emergency declared by Indian Government on 25th June, 1975, two documentary films namely ‘Waves of Revolution’ and ‘Prisoners of Conscience’ have been screened at Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall, Jalandhar.Before screening, kulwinder gave a brief introduction about the films as well as director Mr.Anand Patwardhan. He also explained the circumstances that led to making of both films.
Jalandhar, 02.05.11 – ‘Unite and Fight’ was the message given by Canadian Farm Workers’ Union to their Indian counterparts on the eve of May Day celebrations. The context was the screening of documentary films ‘A Time To Rise’ by organization ‘the People’s Voice at cultural programme organized by Punjab Lok Sabyachark (PLUS) Manch at Ludhiana. Hundreds of viewers watched this classic documentary made by international fame filmmaker Anand Patwardhan in a pin drop silence in a packed open air theatre of Punjabi Bhawan at Ludhiana. A Time To Rise, a documentary made in 1980, is eloquent testimony of the conditions among Chinese and East Indian immigrant workers in British Columbia that provoked the formation of the union, and the response of growers and labor contractors to the threat of unionization. Made over a period of two years, the film is eloquent testimony to the progress of the workers’ movement from the first stirrings of militancy to the energetic canvassing of union members. the progress of the workers’ movement from the first stirrings of militancy to the energetic canvassing of union members under the banner of Canadian Farm Workers’ Union. Before the screening, while introducing the film, Mr.Kulwinder, Convener of the People’s Voice said that the film is bilingual and therefore some dialogues may not be properly understood by non-English knowing viewers but he is sure that since the problems faced by the workers are common throughout the world, this will not effect the clear message give by the film. He explained the aims and objectives of the ogranisation to the viewers and added that a decade ago, the organization was established to introduce the progressive art and culture, especially cinema among the masses and at present three big screenings at Mela Gadari Babian De during the month of October, PLUS Manch programmes of January at Jalandhar and May at Ludhana is being held. He said that apart form big screenings, the organization is holding screening on every month in which screening of film is followed by a discussion. In addition to this they are continuously writing in Newspapers as well as Journals on cinema. He further added that theirs’ is a non-funding organization run by the support of common people. Prior to this, a similar screening was held by the People’s Voice at Jalandhar in which apart from screening of ‘A Time To Rise’, ‘Immigrant’ a short film made by Charlie Chaplin was screened.
